COLUMBIA, SC — The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation has announced that Clayton White, the University of South Carolina’s defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, has been nominated for this year’s esteemed Broyles Award. This accolade is given annually to college football’s top assistant coach and highlights individuals who have substantially impacted the game and their programs.
In his fourth year with the Gamecocks, White has implemented a “Flex-Nickel” defense, which has become the hallmark of South Carolina’s strategic playbook. This innovative system allows the team to shift between a four-man and a three-person front while maintaining five defensive backs on the field, providing versatility and robustness.
This strategic adaptability has been vital in shaping a defense that stands out in college football.
This season, White has leveraged the talents of eight returning starters, including noteworthy players like all-SEC linebacker Debo Williams and a formidable trio of defensive tackles: Alex Huntley, Tonka Hemingway, and T.J. Sanders. Safety Nick Emmanwori has also been pivotal in anchoring the secondary. To bolster his squad, White introduced Edge rushers Kyle Kennard, currently enjoying an All-America caliber season, and Dylan Stewart, a standout candidate for National Freshman of the Year.
Under White’s leadership, the Gamecocks have emerged as a defensive juggernaut, ranking among the nation’s top 20 in several key statistical categories: 14th in scoring defense, 12th rush defense, 19th pass efficiency defense, and 13th in total defense. These impressive rankings underscore the cohesive and powerful defense White has orchestrated in Columbia, making it the strongest the Gamecocks have seen in years.
Clayton White’s nomination for the Broyles Award is a testament to his exceptional work and the significant positive impact he has had on the University of South Carolina’s football program. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on White and his defense to continue their outstanding performance and perhaps elevate him to winning this prestigious award.
