2024 BET Awards Celebrated Black Excellence with Iconic Moments and Record-Breaking Wins

LOS ANGELES — The 2024 BET Awards once again proved why it’s recognized as culture’s biggest night, celebrating outstanding achievements across music, television, film, sports, and the broader Black community worldwide. Held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on June 30, the ceremony was a powerful affirmation of Black creativity, resilience, and impact, featuring electrifying performances, historic wins, and poignant tributes.

The evening was packed with electrifying moments, beginning with Megan Thee Stallion opening the show with an energetic set of hits, including “Boa,” “Hiss,” and “Where Them Girls At.” Returning host Taraji P. Henson captured the audience with her fiery monologue and a soulful rendition of “It’s About Us,” paying tribute to Kendrick Lamar’s “They Not Like Us.”

Victoria Monét shined on stage, delivering a moving performance of her hit “On My Mama” and debuting her new single “Alright,” earning a standing ovation. Her heartfelt acceptance speech for the BET Her Award highlighted her gratitude and aspirations to collaborate more with Black women.

Other standout performances included Sexyy Red teaming up with The Stylistics for “U My Everything,” GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion delivering high-energy sets, and global sounds transported through Tyla’s vibrant South African rendition of “Jump.”

The night also marked a historic first: Will Smith performed live on the BET Awards for the first time, debuting his new song “You Can Make It” alongside Kirk Franklin, Chandler Moore, and Sunday Service Choir, showcasing his musical versatility.

A major highlight was the Lifetime Achievement BET Award honoring Usher, which recognized his over 30 years of influence in the industry. The tribute featured performances by Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Chlöe, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monét, and Latto—each celebrating his vast legacy. Usher expressed his gratitude in an emotional speech, acknowledging his mentors and emphasizing the importance of legacy and family.

Multi-Grammy award-winning artists Lauryn Hill and YG Marley performed “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” culminating in a surprise reunion with Wyclef Jean, bringing a soulful closure to the night.

The ceremony celebrated excellence across categories. Victoria Monét took home both Video of the Year and the BET Her Award for “On My Mama.” Lil Durk and J. Cole won Best Collaboration for “All My Life,” while SZA earned Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. Kendrick Lamar was honored as Best Male R&B/Pop Artist (tie), and Tyla was named Best New Artist.

“Bob Marley: One Love” was awarded Best Movie in Film. Regina King and Denzel Washington were considered Best Actress and Actor, respectively. The YoungStars Award went to Blue Ivy Carter, while Angel Reese and Jalen Brunson garnered the Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year titles.
