SANTA MONICA, CA — The Film Independent Spirit Awards proudly held the 40th Annual Film Awards on February 25, 2025. Back for a second year hosting, comedian Aidy Bryant emceed the ceremony, broadcast live on IMDb’s and Film Independent’s YouTube channels. This was a celebration that underscored the vital role of independent artists in the film industry, a fact that both filmmakers and audiences can unite in supporting.
This year, the show recognized the accomplishments of the year in film and television and commented on Film Independent’s deep legacy of promoting independent artists. A Moving Tribute to Josh Welsh, the beloved former president of Film Independent, who had died after a long and brave five-year battle with cancer. His impact was felt at the organization and in indie cinema.
Anora’s triumphant win of three awards in the film categories, including Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison, is a testament to its critical acclaim. This success represents a significant milestone for independent cinema, which has always been a fertile ground for new ideas and creativity.
“To feel seen with the film and approved of the representation, and I think for me that’s been the most special thing and the most important thing,” Anora director Sean Baker told Evan Jackson of Young Bold, and Regal regarding the feedback of the film.
“I echoed that sentiment, that’s been the most important part of this is the response we’ve gotten from that community and really overwhelmingly positive” Anora star Mikey Madison added.

Best First Feature: Dìdi (Focus Features) Sean Wang won Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.
Best International Film: Flow (Sideshow and Janus Films)
Best Documentary: No Other Land
Best Cinematography: Jomo Fray, Nickel Boys
Best Editing: Hansjörg Weissbrich for Sep 5
The film also took home the John Cassavetes Award for best feature made for less than $1,000,000, and a handful of previously announced awards honored rising stars in the field.

In a ceremony celebrating the fifth time the Spirit Awards took a step to recognize excellence in television, Baby Reindeer was a breakout, booking three awards, including Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series for Richard Gadd.

Film Independent names creators on the rise as well, with awards given to Sarah Friedland for Familiar Touch (Someone to Watch Award), Rachel Elizabeth Seed for A Photographic Memory (Truer Than Fiction Award), and Sarah Winshall (Producer’s Award).
