53rd NAACP Image Awards Release Nominations For Upcoming Show In L.A.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Nominees for the Image Awards were announced during a virtual event on the NAACP’s Instagram page, hosted by actress Kyla Pratt, “Black-ish” actor Marcus Scribner and singer-songwriter Tinashe.

Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Regina King, singer-songwriter H.E.R, Jennifer Hudson, and Tiffany Haddish are all up for the 2022 Entertainer of the Year Award.

We are thrilled to recognize this year’s nominees, who have all brought dynamic, entertaining, and thought provoking content to our attention through their incredible work in film, television, music and more,” Karen Boykin-Towns, Image Awards Committee chairman said.

The award show celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color across more than 80 competitive categories spanning film, television and streaming, music, literature, and podcasts. This year’s award will will also include four new podcast categories: Outstanding News and Information Podcast; Outstanding Lifestyle / Self-Help Podcast; Outstanding Society and Culture Podcast; and Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Podcast.

The four other outstanding motion picture nominees are “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “King Richard,” “Respect,” “The Harder They Fall” and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and the star of ABC’s hit comedy “Black-ish” Anthony Anderson will serve as the show’s host for the second consecutive year.

HBO’s “Insecure” creator and star Issa Rae is nominated twice for the show’s final season, earning recognition in both the lead actress and outstanding writing series categories. The show’s main cast — including Yvonne Orji is also nominated for outstanding actress category, Jay Ellis as outstanding actor, Kendrick Sampson as supporting actor, Natasha Rothwell and Amanda Seales are each nominated in the supporting actress category.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture had several heavy hitters in this category that include, Algee Smith and Daniel Kaluuya for their roles in “Judas And The Black Messiah“. Legendary actor Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, and LaKeith Stanfield for their roles in “The Harder They Fall“.

Outstanding Supporting Actress category is also loaded with some great nominees that include, Aunjanue Ellis in “King Richard”, Danielle Deadwyler and Regina King in “The Harder They Fall”, Audra McDonald in “Respect”, and Dominique Fishback in “Judas And The Black Messiah”.

Will Smith (King Richard), Denzel Washington (Tragedy Of McBeth) were among the nominees for Outstanding Actor category. Halle Berry (Bruised), Zendaya (Malcolm And Marie) and Tessa Thompson were among the nominees for Outstanding Actress category.

The 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards will be televised on BET on February 26, 2022.
