LOS ANGELES, CA — USC Trojans wide receiver Tanook Hines was named Tuesday, Aug. 25, to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler announced.
The nod puts Hines in the mix for an award that goes beyond the box score. Named for Tyler, Texas native and Pro Football Hall of Famer Earl Campbell, the honor recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who embodies the qualities that defined Campbell’s legendary career with integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity, with special emphasis on the tenacity to persist and the determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of a goal.
A Breakout True Freshman Campaign
Hines enters his sophomore season in 2026 with momentum that makes his watch list nod more meaningful. As a true freshman in 2025, he appeared in all 13 games and started eight, quickly becoming a real part of USC’s passing attack rather than a player still waiting to develop.
He finished the season with 34 receptions for 561 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that reflect both his role as an every week contributor and his big-play ability down the field.
Hines’ impact wasn’t limited to offense, either. He carved out a role on special teams as a gunner on USC’s punt coverage unit, racking up two tackles, and also saw time as a kick returner, tallying four returns for 52 yards with a long of 19. That kind of all-purpose usage — offense, coverage teams and the return game — is part of what has USC coaches and, now, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award committee taking notice.
What the Watch List Means
Being named to the watch list is the first step in a multi-month process. The field will be trimmed to as many as 16 semifinalists in November, and that group will be narrowed further to five finalists in December. Broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and past winners of the award all have a hand in the selection process.
The winner will be revealed in December and formally honored at the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet, set for January 27, 2027, in Tyler, Texas, which is Campbell’s hometown and the award’s permanent home.
Why It Matters for USC
For a USC offense looking to build on its 2025 identity, Hines’ inclusion on the watch list is an early sign that the sophomore is being viewed as more than just a rotational piece heading into 2026. With a full offseason to build on his freshman production and an expanded route tree likely in store under the Trojans’ coaching staff, Hines projects as a central figure in USC’s passing game — and a name college football fans should get used to hearing throughout the fall.
USC opens its 2026 season against Fresno State at the L.A. Coliseum on August 29, looking to leverage exactly this kind of dual-threat playmaking, and Hines’ watch list nod adds another storyline to track as the Trojans push through a season with National Championship aspirations.
