NEW YORK CITY, NY – It was all about hip-hop, as some of the genre’s most prominent artists including Drake, Doja Cat, and Lil Baby were among the list of winners at the 2022 XXL Awards.
Although there was no official awards show, the winners were announced via the XXL website on Monday, Jan. 24.
Drake took home the most awards, scoring three trophies including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for his double-platinum selling album “Certified Lover Boy.”
Doja Cat nabbed two awards including Female Rapper of the Year and Performer of the Year.
DJ Khaled’s song “Every Chance I Get” featuring Lil Durk and Lil Baby, won the award for Song of the Year, while Lil Baby beat out fellow rappers including Drake, Moneybagg Yo, Kanye West, Nas and Tyler, and The Creator to win the award for Male Artist of the Year.
Jay-Z, who was recently inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, was awarded Hip-Hop’s Humanitarian of the Year.
The winners for 11 out of the 12 categories were selected by the XXL Awards Board, which is composed of some of hip-hop’s top music executives, managers, producers, A&R’s, DJs, and artists.
Eminem, Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Charlamagne tha God, Sway Calloway, Big Boy, Lil’ Kim, 2 Chainz, and 50 Cent were among the 158 hip-hop virtuosos and enthusiasts selected to serve on the board.
While the XXL Awards Board was responsible for choosing the majority of the winners, the fans had the opportunity to cast their votes for The People’s Champ Award.
Ultimately, it was Nicki Minaj who reigned supreme as the recipient of The People’s Choice Award, edging out a hefty list of nominees including Cardi B, Kanye West, Megan Thee Stallion, Nas, Tyler, The Creator, Drake, J. Cole, and others.
