ANAHEIM, CA — After several months of anticipation and negotiations, Major League Baseball created a plan and schedule for moving forward with the 2020 shorten season. Players would return to their facilities after following daily health protocols, as Los Angeles Angels players returned one teammate in particular is having reservations regarding his return.
Mike Trout one of the greatest hitters and players of our generation, yet due to COVID-19 concerns may not debut his skills for the 2020 season. Trout who is currently under his $427 million contract is more concerned about his wife Jessica and the health of their baby soon to be born.
“I talked to a lot of guys across the league and they’re texting me a lot,” Trout said. “I’m not gonna name any names, but they’re all thinking the same thing: ‘Is this gonna work?’”
Trout like many other baseball players raise a great point with just a 60-game schedule plus playoffs with no fans in attendance, how is this plan for 2020 suppose to work? He is a man who truly loves the game of baseball but will jeopardize his family’s health for it. He’s still scheduled to play but won’t rule out changing his mind if anything changes regarding COVID19.
“It’s going to come down to how safe it’ll be,” Trout said. “If there’s an outbreak or something happens in the next few weeks, I’ll have to reconsider. There are a lot of questions. I love baseball, but I have to do what’s right for my family. It’s a tough decision if something happens down the road.”
For the past eight seasons, Trout has been the Angels most dedicated and top player, but the most important things on his mind are the health and safety of his family.
With the COVID-19 death cases surpassing 130,000 people, and the numbers continue to serge in states like California, Florida, Texas, and Arizona, one can’t fault Trout if he decided to skip the 2020 season.
Trout is playing for the macro and not the micro when it comes to his career, but most importantly for the safety of his wife and child to be born healthy.
The Angels play their first intrasquad game on July 8 according to manager Joe Maddon.
