DALLAS, TX — Arizona State Sun Devils running back Cam Skattebo has emerged as a dynamic presence on the field, showcasing a versatility that sets him apart from other players. After the Sun Devils destroyed the Iowa State Cyclones in a 45-19 win in the Big 12 Championship game.
“There are so many options you can do with me. The receivers don’t get the option to run the ball. They have to catch the ball for the most part, you know? And I get the option to catch the ball in the backfield, run the ball, throw the ball possibly, kick the ball possibly. I have that option ‘cause I’m back there with the quarterback,” Skattebo said regarding his role on the team.
His enthusiasm for the game is palpable, and he credits his success to the coaching staff.
“I’m just blessed to be in this position. He understands what he has back there. Coach Royal uses me to my max potential, and that’s why I’m here, and that’s why I stayed. Because I knew that I was in a good position to be successful. And I just love playing for this football team.”
Skattebo has faced challenges throughout his career, often finding himself in the underdog position. He boldly asserted, “I’ve been disrespected my whole life. I’ve always been the underdog. And nobody respects the fact that I’m the best running back in the country. And I’m going to stand on that. If people want to disrespect that, I’m going to keep going. I’m going to keep proving people wrong.”
Looking to the future, Skattebo is focused on making an impact at the next level. “Whatever NFL team takes me is going to get a gem. And I’m going to give it everything I got for them. No matter, winning the Heisman or losing the Heisman, I’m going to keep going.” He also explained that his journey is about more than just accolades. “No matter winning the Heisman, I should still be in that situation. We’re better than that level.”
“They developed me to become the level that I’m playing at now. Coming to this school at ASU, having Coach [Marcus] Arroyo and Coach [Kenny] Dillingham pushing me and making me better, they know what it takes to be successful at this level,” Skattebo said the vital role of his coaches and teammates in his development.
He is quick to express gratitude for the support he receives, both on and off the field. “I’ve been set up for success because of the beloved coaches that I have and the teammates I have that trust me and believe in me. The reason I’m here is because of them.”
Recognizing the importance of teamwork, Skattebo stated, “If we didn’t have the offensive line, we aren’t scoring touchdowns. Those guys have put in the effort to get better every day. You see it week in and week out; they just get better and better.”
As he continues to make waves in college football, Skattebo remains humble yet proud. “I don’t know how many yards I have this season, but they’re the reason for it. Even being in the Heisman talk is awesome, and that’s the reason those guys [are] upfront. I just want to keep spreading love to those guys because they deserve it.”
With an unyielding spirit and a strong support system, Cam Skattebo looks to keep proving doubters wrong while striving for greatness on and off the field.
