BOSTON, MA — After months of speculation the day has finally come for Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown to be locked in on the richest deal in NBA history as Brown signed a 5-year, $304 million supermax deal with the team according to his agent Jason Glushon.
Brown became eligible for the five-year supermax extension with the Celtics when he earned second-team All-NBA honors for the 2022-23 season. He will make $31.8 million next season in the final year of his previous deal. In his new deal, he is set to $52.3 million during the 2024-25 season and $69.1 million in 2028-29, the final year of the deal. Brown did not get the no-trade clause option in his deal due to him signing the extension.
The Celtics are determined to build around their two superstars in Jason Tatum and Brown for the future as the dynamic duo have combined for approximately 57 points per game last season. With the new deal for Brown, the Celtics upper management will have to figure out a way to bring talent around the two in order for the franchise to raise that 18th championship banner. Every season that Brown has played for the Celtics they’ve made the playoffs including making and eventually coming up short against the Golden State Warriors during the 2022 NBA Finals. Brown is a great ambassador for the league, the Celtics, all while serving as the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) vice president. As a local philanthropist, he spoke at Variety’s Sports and Entertainment Summit about off-court success, and has not strayed away from speaking on issues that concern his community and calling out some racist fans in the city he plays in.
With his 7uice Foundation, Brown continues to empower Black youth and young people of color access to equal education and leadership opportunities.
The time is now for the Celtics to make a strong push towards returning to the NBA Finals, question is who will be along for the journey that will help Brown and Tatum get over the hump? These two stars are special, and they are more than capable of carrying a team, yet what talent will President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens surround them with in order to shoulder the heavy load?
