LOS ANGELES, CA —- In front of several of his peers and a star studded audience at the 2023 BET Awards, legendary hip-hop artist, actor, and entrepreneur Busta Rhymes was presented with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award.
Busta Rhymes (51) has and continues to contribute to the culture in a consistent, loving and mighty way, as he helps open up doors for the younger generation of artist. The curator of creativity when it comes to his sounds and video visuals is unmatched and what truly set Busta Rhymes from many emcees along the way. From his debut with “Leaders of the New School”, to his memorable verse on A Tribe Called Quest song “Scenario” to betting on himself as a solo artist after departing Leaders Of The New School. Rhymes told a very heartfelt story of determination and will that enabled his success as a solo multi-platinum artist during his acceptance speech.
Rhymes made sure to emphasize a very important message during his speech that resonated with many in the audience and those watching via television.
“One thing I need y’all to know, we’re going to stop these petty beefs we be doing in rap, the s**t is…y’all messing up the bag, y’all messing up the energy,” he explained. “We going to love each other (and) we’re going to get to this money.”
Rhymes had worked a plathera of artists and producers throughout the years that include, Q-Tip, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Dr. Dre, The Game, Flipmode Squad, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Bia, whom he collaborated with on a new track “Beach Ball”. He told the crowd, “it’s the anthem for the summer.”
The audience listened to each word of his speech, Rhymes also said he was groomed by the elder statesmen of the culture such as Chuck D (Public Enemy), and Big Daddy Kane.
Rhymes added: “It’s just me trying to do my duty to continue to advance the culture and continue to contribute in a significant way. I see so many people in here that I have known and grown with for a long time. You’re watching me grow and I love y’all, and I know y’all love me.“
He is as relevant today as when he debuted, the brilliance and care he has for the craft is truly unmatched. It was truly a moment to witness and see Busta Rhymes get the flowers he truly deserves.
