LOS ANGELES, CA — It was reported on Tuesday morning by NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero that Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles while training for the upcoming season.
When many found out the news around the league including Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III that sent their best wishes to him.
In 13 games last season, Akers led the Rams with 625 yards and two touchdowns on 145 carries. He also caught 11 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. In the Rams two playoff games, Akers also had rushed for 272 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Darrell Henderson split time with Akers last season, and finished with 624 yards rushing and scored five touchdowns. He ran for 100 yards against the Buffalo Bills last season. A great red zone threat for the Rams that are now lead by a strong arm quarterback in Matthew Stafford and an offensive line lead by Andrew Whitworth that can hold the line long enough for Henderson to score or acquire the first down.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Rams will remain with their current roster and aren’t looking for any outside players for now. The Rams have Xavier Jones and could utilize his talents in the backfield when Henderson is on the sidelines. Losing Akers is a huge blow to the offense, however the backfield is now under Henderson’s rule for the season.
