BRADENTON, FL — In just two games to start this condensed WNBA season in the “Wubble,” we have seen both ends of the spectrum for the Los Angeles Sparks.
We have seen absolute domination when they routed the Phoenix Mercury on Opening Night, and now we have seen them get dominated by the Chicago Sky who defeated the Sparks 96-78 on Tuesday night.
As we all know the margin for error is small in a shortened season. A win and a loss hold more value than ever before.
Even with an experienced team littered with All-Star talent, a consistent effort is required every for the Sparks to have success.
Head coach Derek Fisher spoke about the importance of coming out with the right energy.
“We’ve just gotta find ways to make sure we’re ready to play every night,” Fisher said after the loss. “That’s my responsibility and also our veteran leaders and our core players, they have to also set the example.”
Candace Parker finished with 8 points on 4/11 shooting and nine rebounds and she talked about how the slow start derailed them.
“Chicago played well tonight…we got to figure out ways to start the first and third quarters better,” Parker said. “Our second unit did an amazing job, we finally got some stops. We have to start better (though).”
The second unit brought tremendous effort and energy scoring 30 points led by Brittney Sykes who scored a team-high 16 points. Sydney Wiese also added eight off the bench as both tried to keep the Sparks within striking distance throughout the second half.
The Sparks have too much talent to let a tough loss to a good team like the Sky bring them down. However, it should be a reminder that a consistent effort in a shortened season is essential to their success this year.
