COSTA MESA, CA — The first day of Training Camp for NFL players and fans is much like the first day of school. All players reported to camp for the Bolts except one key player — RB Melvin Gordon. Head coach Anthony Lynn spoke briefly about the holdout situation concerning Gordon.
“We don’t talk about players who aren’t here. We understand his situation, we love Melvin,” Lynn said. “We’re a good football team with Melvin.”
Gordon has scored 28 total touchdowns during his time with the Chargers, second only to Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley. Gordon is set to make $5.6 million this season for the Chargers.
QB Philip Rivers also spoke about the situation, “Certainly is a deep position. We love Melvin, but we’re going to go with what we got. We have a pretty darn good group.”
Later in the day, a few media outlets tried to cause division between Rivers and Gordon, insinuating that Rivers simply didn’t care about Gordon’s absence or his contract situation. Rivers comments were completely taken out of context, and rest assured these two will not only have a conversation but will continue to have cohesiveness in the locker room.
