Chargers WR Ladd McConkey Recalls Kirby Smart’s Guidance and Georgia QB Gunner Stockton
EL SEGUNDO, CA – Every rookie dreams of making an immediate impact, but for Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey, this season has been about more than just numbers; it’s about forging his own identity in the NFL crucible. Learning the ropes from a seasoned pro like Keenan Allen and catching passes from the rocket arm of starting quarterback Justin Herbert, McConkey has quickly become a vital cog in the Chargers’ offense. With five touchdowns and nearly 700 receiving yards already under his belt, his incredible work ethic is clearly paying dividends under the coaching staff led by Jim Harbaugh.
Despite the bright lights of the NFL, McConkey hasn’t forgotten where he came from or the people who helped shape him. His eyes remain firmly fixed on his former team, the Georgia Bulldogs, and he’s especially proud of a certain quarterback who just led Georgia to an SEC Championship in Gunner Stockton.
McConkey’s gratitude for his time in Athens runs deep, particularly for the man at the helm of the program.
“Coach [Kirby] Smart, he’s awesome. He’s a true winner,” McConkey told Nitecast Media. “He showed me what hard work was, and if you just put your head down and grind, what you can really get out of that. So I had so much success there, and I credit a ton to him. He’s a heck of a coach, but he’s an even better guy.“
That kind of endorsement speaks volumes about the culture Smart has built over the years, including National Championships (one in which McConkey was a part of) and SEC Championships. A foundation that clearly instilled the relentless drive McConkey now showcases on Sundays.
There’s quarterback Gunner Stockton, who recently hoisted the SEC Championship MVP trophy after defeating Alabama. McConkey’s pride in Stockton’s success is incredible.
“He’s a stud! I mean, he’s literally he’s a dog— you see him out there taking hits, getting up, bouncing back,” McConkey said. “And those guys rally around him. You can tell he’s a true leader. He’s taking that [Georgia] team far, and I’m super excited to watch him. I’ll always be tuned in.“
That “dawg” mentality, that grit and leadership, is precisely what Georgia needed to overcome its own challenges this season and claim another SEC title. Now, the Bulldogs are preparing for the Sugar Bowl (CFP Quarterfinal) appearance, with their sights set squarely on the National Championship. McConkey, like many former Dawgs, will undoubtedly be watching every play, cheering on his old stomping grounds.
While his heart may be partly with the Bulldogs, McConkey’s hands are firmly on the task at hand in Los Angeles. He continues to be a key player in the Chargers’ quest to secure their own playoff berth at the end of the NFL regular season. It’s a delicate balance for the rookie – honoring his past, celebrating his roots, all while aggressively forging a bright future in the league. Ladd McConkey is proof that you can take the player out of Georgia, but you can’t take Georgia out of the player, and that dual passion is making him one of the most exciting young talents in the NFL.
