Colman Domingo to Receive NAACP President’s Award For A Legacy of Artistry and Impact
HOLLYWOOD, CA – The NAACP Image Awards have long stood as a beacon celebrating Black excellence across the arts and public service. This year, the 57th NAACP Image Awards is set to bestow one of its highest honors upon a true titan of stage and screen: Colman Domingo.
The multifaceted actor, writer, and director will be presented with the prestigious President’s Award during the live ceremony, airing Saturday, February 28, at 8:00 PM ET/ 5:00 PM PT on BET and CBS from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
Domingo’s recognition comes at a time when his star is shining brighter than ever. This year alone, he’s nominated for two NAACP Image Awards for his compelling role and directing work in “The Four Seasons.” His recent triumph at the 55th NAACP Image Awards in 2024, where he achieved a historic double win for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture (“Rustin”) and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (“The Color Purple“), further underscores his undeniable talent.
The President’s Award is not given lightly; it’s a testament to special achievement and distinguished public service. Domingo now joins an esteemed pantheon of past recipients, including icons like Dave Chappelle, Usher, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade, Rihanna, LeBron James, Kerry Washington, Spike Lee, Muhammad Ali, and Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, all recognized for their profound contributions to culture and community.
Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, articulated the profound reasons behind Domingo’s honor.
“We are honored to recognize Colman Domingo with the President’s Award for the breadth and depth of his leadership, artistry, and cultural impact. Across film, television, and theater, Colman has consistently chosen work that challenges narratives, expands representation, and centers humanity with dignity and grace,” Johnson said. “He is not only exemplary at his craft, but intentional in how he uses his platform to uplift stories that might otherwise go unheard. As an artist, he leads with integrity, fearlessness, and a deep commitment to community, making him a model for what it means to build a legacy that extends far beyond the stage or screen.“
Louis Carr, President of BET, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Domingo’s connective power.
“Colman Domingo represents the power of creativity to bring people together and move culture forward,” Carr said. “At BET, our commitment has always been to community, culture, and connection, and Colman’s impact reflects those values in action. The way he honors the stories and legacy that came before us while inspiring future generations is what makes his influence so meaningful. We’re proud to celebrate his extraordinary contributions and to recognize the lasting impact of his vision and unwavering commitment to excellence.“
Domingo’s career is a testament to relentless dedication and an unyielding pursuit of compelling storytelling. He has garnered nominations for two Oscars, a BAFTA, a Tony® Award, Critics Choice Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards, most recently earning an Emmy nomination for his work on Netflix’s “The Four Seasons.” His acclaimed role on the HBO series Euphoria earned him an Emmy win, with Season 3 set to premiere this April. Looking ahead, fans can anticipate his powerful portrayal of patriarch Joe Jackson in Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael,” followed by roles in Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” Season 2 of “The Four Seasons,” and Jaume Collet-Serra’s “An Innocent Girl.”
Domingo’s impact reaches into the cultural zeitgeist. He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 2025 as a “Closer,” honored for his efforts to close the racial equity gap, and was recognized on the prestigious 2024 TIME100 List as one of the 100 most influential individuals globally. His position as a co-chair of last year’s Met Gala, which generated a remarkable $31 million, further solidifies his reputation as a major cultural influence.
The “57th NAACP Image Awards” telecast promises an evening of celebration and inspiration, with winners for non-televised categories recognized at the “57th NAACP Image Awards” Creative Honors on Thursday, February 26, and virtually from February 23-25. Colman Domingo’s President’s Award is more than just an accolade; it’s a recognition of a profound artist whose work consistently elevates, challenges, and inspires, solidifying his rightful place as a true icon in Hollywood and beyond.
