LOS ANGELES — In an exclusive eye-opening conversation with host Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay, musician-turned-actor David Banner shared his transformative journey in the acting world, all thanks to an unexpected mentorship with Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson. The dialogue captured the pivotal moments that reshaped Banner’s life and career, highlighting the impact and wisdom imparted by one of the industry’s icons.

Recalling his first encounter with Jackson during the Peacock series Fight Night, which became the streaming network’s most-viewed program, Banner detailed a humbling yet life-altering moment. “When I first met Samuel L. Jackson, man, I was a maniac,” Banner admitted. During a table read in Memphis for Black Snake Moan, Jackson questioned Banner’s preparation, asking,

Who’s your acting coach?” Jackson bluntly suggested, “Fire them! They suck!” This raw critique sparked a mix of embarrassment and determination in Banner.

Instead of succumbing to discouragement, Banner felt a spark within him to seize an opportunity. In a bold move, he asked, “If I’m so bad, then would you be my acting coach?” To his surprise, Jackson agreed, inviting Banner to his home for personal training. “Samuel L. Jackson said, ‘A humble rapper? Meet me at my house next week,‘” Banner recalled, emphasizing this experience’s monumental impact on his confidence as an actor.
Throughout their mentorship, Jackson encouraged Banner to embrace his place in the industry. “He later told me, ‘You deserve to be here. Stand in your greatness,‘” Banner shared, revealing how Jackson’s encouragement helped dismantle his self-doubt and silence the inner critic.

Banner also shed light on his struggles, discussing a period of depression while balancing roles in Fight Night and BET’s Family Business. He candidly expressed, “Last year, I was shooting in the middle of my biggest depression, bro. I couldn’t tell them that I was doing both simultaneously.

Reflecting on the experience, Banner acknowledged the pressure of performing alongside industry heavyweights like Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, and Terrence Howard. Despite the immense pressure, Jackson’s reassurance provided solace.

After I got done with Fight Night, I went to him, and I was like… because I didn’t talk to him if I didn’t make him proud,” Banner explained. Jackson’s simple yet powerful advice: “Stop that s**t, man. Quit it. You’re supposed to be here.”

Banner’s reflections on Club Shay Shay highlight the transformative power of mentorship and the importance of self-belief.

Samuel L. Jackson’s role in Banner’s life illustrates how honest feedback, guidance, and encouragement can empower one to embrace their potential and thrive in new arenas. As Banner continues to grow as an actor, he carries forward the lessons and confidence instilled by Jackson, standing firmly in the light of his success.
