PHOENIX, AZ — With the Fiesta Bowl just around the corner, Penn State defensive end Dominic DeLuca has made headlines not because of his play on the field, but because of how he carries himself in the face of adversity. DeLuca recently sat down to discuss his mentality on the field and what moves the needle for him.

Looking ahead to this week against Boise State, DeLuca spoke of the skill of their quarterback.

“Just doing our job,” DeLuca said. “He fits into their system pretty well, and us doing our jobs at a high level, creating pressure on him, moving him off the spot, putting him in situations where he has to throw the ball, it’s only going to benefit us.”

It’s that emphasis on disciplined execution that’s the foundation of DeLuca’s approach as he prepares his team for what’s to come.

DeLuca’s unselfishness and adaptability have teammates and coaches recognizing his efforts off the field. When asked about his willingness to fill whatever role is needed for the team’s betterment, DeLuca attributed his all-in attitude to his upbringing. “I’d say it comes from my parents. They all tell me you’ve got to be a team player,” he said. Whether it’s putting on an extra lineman or a safety, the team’s unselfishness is something that DeLuca is happy to be a part of.

His story, as a walk-on, gives added dimension to his story.

“Walk-ons are the backbone of college football… They want to live their dream… To be part of the culture of [Penn State] football.”
At that moment comes a profound sense of gratitude and pride for the Penn State community he is part of.

DeLuca’s most formative professional experience to date has been working under Coach Stacey Collins during his first couple of years at Penn State, specifically for special teams. “I love Coach Collins,” DeLuca said, recalling the relationship he built with his coach. As fate would have it, DeLuca will be excited about another round with Collins, only this time on opposite sidelines.

As the Lions prepare for the dynamic Boise State offense, DeLuca focuses on essential execution, like tackling, which he stressed all season.
“I mean, being able to just play as a team is a huge thing for us,” he said. His philosophy is based on the team, ensuring every player plays their part in each defensive unit.

DeLuca lauded Reed’s football intellect when asked about the impact of teammates such as Jalen Reed. “I think Jalen Reed’s one of the smartest guys on the field at all times… He knows the play before it even happens,” said DeLuca, adding that they all work well together in the trenches.

It is the desire to represent Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl, playing for its fans and what it means to wear the Blue and White—the resolve and determination of this Penn State team led by Dominic DeLuca. With such commitment on their side, the team is ready for a riveting showdown.
