LOS ANGELES– Before taking the reins as President of Empire, Tina Davis carved out a legendary career at Def Jam Records, shaping the landscape of hip-hop in the 1990s and early 2000s. In an exclusive interview with Nitecast Media’s Nick Hamilton, Davis offered a glimpse into her role in helping to foster the careers of iconic artists.

One name that immediately came to mind was Oakland music artist Richie Rich, a talent and legend whom Davis holds in very high regard.

Richie Rich is the one. That’s my heart. Yes,” Davis exclaimed. “I think the biggest thing was his music because he knows what he’s doing when it comes to rapping and everything else. But sometimes just giving him a sound that is not normal, that doesn’t sound like the Bay, and him putting the Bay on top of that helps him to break outside of just the Bay Area.” Davis explained, highlighting her strategy of blending Rich’s Oakland roots with a more universally appealing sound.

The conversation also turned to Warren G’s seminal album, Regulate… G Funk Era, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary on Def Jam Records. Warren G signed to the label in 1994 and ultimately saved the company from closing its doors for good.
The first thing I thought about was, damn, we got one of those ones from [Dr.] Dre and from Snoop [Dogg] and the whole crew. I felt like Warren was that glue to all of it, and he did well,” Davis recalled her initial reaction to the groundbreaking masterpiece.

Her admiration for Warren G extends beyond his musical talent.

I was very happy for him because he’s just a good person overall, regardless of whether he’s a rapper or producer. Just a good guy. So I was really happy that he was able to get his shine and his mark in the business because he was a producer, and a lot of people didn’t necessarily give him the credit he deserved,” Davis emphasized, underscoring Warren G’s often-overlooked contributions to the music scene. “He’s impactful in the music scene for me.”

Davis’s reflections provide a fascinating insight into the creative decisions and personal connections that shaped the golden era of hip-hop. She worked with many notable artists, including Redman and Method Man, Montell Jordan, as well as Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and DMX. Davis would later work with global R&B superstar and talent Chris Brown. Now, as President of Empire, she continues to leverage her expertise and passion to champion new artists and drive the future of music.
