LOS ANGELES, CA — NBA Hall Of Famer Spencer Haywood was once in process of developing his own documentary based upon his life on and off the court, and in an exclusive interview with Nitecast Media, Haywood has embarked upon a larger platform to tell his story.
At one point Kobe Bryant approached Haywood and agreed to produce his life documentary until Bryant passed away in 2020. Later NBA superstar Lebron James agreed to produce the documentary, however no plans were revealed for shooting dates and a possible release due to scheduling conflicts. Three years later an elated Haywood shared that his documentary had been turned into a biopic due to increased popularity of HBO’s Winning Time.
“It’s not a documentary anymore because of ‘Winning Time’, everybody else hated it…but I loved it and I enjoyed Wood Harris playing me,” Haywood said. “Lionsgate [Films] and Vassal Benford… and Mark Canton who has the whole series on Power, (films like) 300, Torrel Harris who is Tobias Harris’ dad (and we got a deal.”
Several NBA players including Lebron James and Kevin Garnett have strongly campaigned for the current NBA one-and-done rule to be renamed the Spencer Haywood rule, in honor of him winning his lawsuit he filed against the NBA that required that a player not be drafted by NBA team until four years after graduating high school. The rich history behind lawsuit as Haywood accomplished something unprecedented in the so-called small man took on city hall, and won.
As the story will now be told on the silver screen, Haywood reveled who he desires for him to play him in the upcoming film.
“One of the guys that we’re looking through to fill that role of Spencer is Dwyane Wade,” Haywood said.
“We spent a weekend at the (Basketball) Hall Of Fame playing golf and talking about it.“
Haywood also expressed his desire to see that same rule to happen with future WNBA players in order to help grow the game better.
There is no release date for the film, stay tuned to Nitecast Media and www.youtube.com/NHExperienceTV for updates.
