EUGENE, OR — After obtaining his first win in the Big Ten Conference as a starting quarterback for the Oregon Ducks over Idaho 24-24, Dillon Gabriel looks to improve while solidifying his legacy in Eugene which could come with a Heisman Trophy and possibly a national championship once it’s all said and done. Currently, Gabriel and his team are taking one week at a time and remaining focused on the teams in front of them.

There were a lot of learning moments for us, and I am excited to watch the film and get back to work because there are certainly some things that we can clean up“, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said after their win over Idaho. “Great teams are able to learn from tight matches. This was a tight match, and we didn’t create some of the explosive plays I was hoping we could create offensively. We gave up a couple of critical plays on defense, so certainly, some things for us to attack.

Throughout the years in college athletics, relationships, and community play a pivotal role in shaping players and programs. Recently, quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a sixth-year player, shared some heartfelt reflections on his relationship with Oregon Ducks football head coach Dan Lanning, the influence of Nike, and the legacy of Marcus Mariota, a figure who has left an indelible mark on the Oregon football program.

Gabriel emphasizes his deep love and belonging to the Oregon community, particularly in Eugene. This connection is not just about the university’s athletic prowess but also about creating an environment where everyone comes together to support one another. He remarked, “As players, we’re extremely grateful. We know it comes from love and passion for the sports program.” This sentiment highlights the importance of community support, which motivates him to strive for excellence on and off the field.

A key element of success in sports is the relationship between players and their coaches. Coach Lanning has made a concerted effort to foster chemistry with Gabriel, which has enhanced their dynamic on the field and extended to shared experiences off the field, such as golfing together. He humorously recounted their day on the golf course, showcasing their light-hearted competitiveness. “I parred, I think he double bogeyed. But from then on… the dude went birdie, par, he played out of his mind.” Such experiences solidify their bond and translate into mutual support and understanding during high-pressure situations in games.

A key element of success in sports is the relationship between players and their coaches. Coach Lanning has made a concerted effort to foster chemistry with Gabriel that dates back many years before arriving at Oregon. Which has enhanced their dynamic on the field and extended to shared experiences off the field, such as golfing together. Dylan humorously recounted their day on the golf course, showcasing their light-hearted competitiveness. “I parred, I think he double bogeyed. But from then on… the dude went birdie, par, he played out of his mind.” Such experiences solidify their bond and translate into mutual support and understanding during high-pressure situations in games.

He admired former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, particularly the qualities that make him a role model.

I just love how he played and what he represents on and off the field,” Gabriel stated.

Mariota’s journey through adversity and challenge resonates with young athletes, serving as a reminder of the importance of authenticity and perseverance. Wearing the number eight, a tribute to Mariota, symbolizes more than just a digit on a jersey; it embodies the responsibility of representing something greater.

As Gabriel reflects on his journey, he acknowledges the growth he has experienced throughout the ups and downs of college football. “I think I have grown and improved from each experience,” he noted.

His focus on continuous improvement—physically, mentally, or emotionally—illustrates a mature understanding of what it means to evolve as an athlete and a leader. Dylan recognizes the significance of helping others reach their potential; demonstrating outstanding leadership involves uplifting those around you.
Through conversations with Coach Lanning during the pro day, Gabriel gained insights into the strategic execution of Oregon’s offense, reinforcing the value of mentorship. By examining the successes of predecessors like Mariota and applying those lessons, he aims to contribute to the program’s legacy.

Gabriel’s narrative powerfully reminds us of the intertwined nature of relationships, community, and personal growth in college athletics. With a strong sense of purpose and an appreciation for the past, he is ready to leave his mark at Oregon while building a legacy that future athletes can aspire to emulate. As he continues on this journey, he and coach Lanning set the stage for a future filled with promise, dedication, and shared success. With a long season ahead, the eyes are ears of many will be on the Oregon program, especially competing within the Big Ten Conference.
