LOS ANGELES — During its nationwide run, “Games Women Play” stars two seasoned actors – Demetria McKinney (Tyler Perry’s House of Payne) and Flex Alexander (One On One, The Hills Have Eyes 2) – whose journey through this project is their experience of working under the helm of Carl Payne, who also stars in and directs the play.
Being directed by a fellow actor could present challenges, yet McKinney found the experience surprisingly smooth.
“It was easier than I thought it would be,” she said. “I tend to enjoy directors who come from the background of acting because they know a little bit nuanced ways of communicating what they’re looking for. They’ve been in those shoes.”
Alexander echoed this sentiment, highlighting Payne’s ability to balance the many demands of the directorial role while maintaining a collaborative atmosphere.
“He’s willing to listen to the ideologies. He’s willing to hear the conversation out,” he said, appreciating Payne’s openness to ideas and practical communication skills.
Both actors expressed how Payne’s background in television directing brought a unique flavor to the stage, incorporating elements typically seen in TV or film. Alexander described how Payne’s approach involved technology and innovation, making the production a visually and emotionally engaging experience for the audience.
“We’re doing things that are only really recognized in the TV world or the movie world,” Alexander explained.
When asked if Payne’s directing style was more like Phil Jackson‘s or Bill Belichick‘s, both McKinney and Alexander leaned toward Phil Jackson. “There’s a zen to it,” Alexander noted. “It’s like you’re being controlled, and you don’t even know it,” adding that Payne’s style brings a sense of calm and direction without overt control.
McKinney and Alexander’s reflections underscore Payne’s effective and refreshing leadership style. His ability to blend acting insights with directorial prowess while fostering a collaborative environment sets a promising stage for an unforgettable theatrical experience.
