INDIANAPOLIS, IN — In a chippy third-quarter confrontation during Saturday’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky, a physical play and subsequent foul call drew significant attention and sparked heated reactions from players on both teams.
The incident began when Sky forward Angel Reese drove toward the basket. Caitlin Clark rotated over defensively and committed a foul by swatting at Reese’s right hand, knocking Reese off balance and to the ground. Clark’s action was initially called a personal foul, but after the referees reviewed it, the call was upgraded to a flagrant foul after they observed Clark using her left hand to shove Reese to the floor.
Following the foul, Fever teammate Aliyah Boston moved quickly to separate Clark from Reese, who was visibly upset and yelling as Clark turned her back. In the aftermath, both Reese and Boston received technical fouls, intensifying the drama of the moment. Clark’s personal foul call was upgraded to a Flagrant one call.
“It was just a good play on the basketball. I’m not sure what the ref saw about upgrading it, and that’s up to their discretion. It takes a foul to put them at the free-throw line. I’ve watched a lot of basketball in my life, that’s exactly what it was. I wasn’t trying to do anything malicious. That’s not the type of player I am,” Clark said post-game. She finished the game with a triple-double—20 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists—in a dominated 93-58 victory over the Sky.
Reese, who contributed a double-double of her own with 12 points and 17 rebounds, spoke about the foul call post game, “It was a basketball play, refs got it right, move on.”
The game highlighted the physicality and competitive intensity of these two teams’ season opener. While Clark maintained her innocence regarding any malicious intent, the incident underscored the fierce rivalry and high stakes for both teams early in the season.
