Jackson State University remained undefeated after a 22-14 win over Campbell to secure homecoming weekend. Big names that were in attendance included Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, and P. Valley (cast). Uncle Snoop came through the locker room to turn up after Jackson State’s victory. Head coach Deion Sanders, along with students from Alabama State, joined Michael Strahan on “Good Morning America” to discuss the Mississippi water crisis.

A few weeks prior, following the 26-12 victory over the Alabama State Hornets on their homecoming field, head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. and Jackson State’s Sanders crossed paths for a post-game handshake, where Sanders was met with a heated exchange from a displeased Robinson after attempting to “dap” him up – a culturally appropriate greeting for two black men who respect one another. Robinson and Sanders joined the media after the soft altercation and both made trending comments.

“I’m living on the shoulders of SWAC. He’s not SWAC. I’m SWAC,” stated Robinson.

Coach Prime later admitted that he was disturbed by the ‘He ain’t SWAC’ remark and asked members of the media, “Who is SWAC if I’m not SWAC?”

There’s a misconception that should be addressed regarding who is and who isn’t allowed to affirm HBCU Culture- similar to he or she isn’t “black.” Robinson, who was selected in the second round (50th overall) of the 1992 NFL Draft, is fundamentally SWAC. He attended Alabama St. He is a product of the HBCU culture and one of the few athletes to join the NFL without going to a prestigious ‘white’ university. Put some respect on his name!

By definition, although he did not attend an HBCU, Sanders is also SWAC—he is part of a collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, made up of historically black colleges and universities in the southern United States.  He may not have Robinson’s HBCU roots, but his methods should be accepted by HBCU cultural standards.

Pastor Prime Echoes Faith

HBCUs are deeply rooted in their faith and have a long church history. Prime enjoys spreading the “good word,” and he isn’t afraid to teach his team that having faith is the only way to overcome any limitation, addiction, or uncertainty that they may face as they progress through school, professional sports, and life.

Party Prime: Coach Prime can “Gig”

Let’s be real. Aside from academic superiority and prestige, HBCUs are known for their Greek life, legendary homecoming celebrations, and pride. Black people enjoy remembering and honoring dance, movement, and step. Sanders’ “Prime Time” Dance blends seamlessly into HBCU culture.

Culture and Legacy

Sanders’ children are SWAC. Shedeur, Shilo, and Shelomi Sanders are Jackson State University athletes with a high profile. Jackson State’s blood will run through the Sanders lineage and will further mobilize and amplify funding, enrollment, and community participation.
