Jennifer Hudson Reaches EGOT Status After Winning Tony Award For “A Strange Loop”

NEW YORK, NY – Jennifer Hudson is officially a member of the EGOT club.

Hudson made history at the 2022 Tony Awards on Sunday night – becoming the second Black woman to win all four major entertainment awards – after “A Strange Loop” won the award for Best Musical.

She served as one of the production’s co-producers along with other notable industry figures including Don Cheadle, Mindy Kaling, RuPaul Charles, Alan Cumming, Ilana Glazer and Billy Porter.

The musical’s playwright, Michael R. Jackson, also won a Tony for Best Book of a Musical.

Hudson’s journey to becoming an EGOT winner began in 2007 after she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 2006 film “Dreamgirls.”

In 2009, she picked up her first Grammy when her eponymous debut album won for Best R&B Album. Hudson picked up her second Grammy in 2017, when the Broadway cast album for “The Color Purple” won the award for Best Musical Theatre Album.

Serving as an executive producer on the Virtual Reality (VR) animated film “Baba Yaga,” the “American Idol” alum nabbed a Daytime Emmy in 2021 when the short film won for Outstanding Interactive Media for a Daytime Program.

With her Tony win, Hudson is the 17th person to reach EGOT status. She now joins the likes of other elite members which include Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, John Legend, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and others.
