PARK CITY, UT — Heading into its 41st season of showcasing films from mainstream to independent, the Sundance Film Festival kicked off on a brisk but sunny January 23 in Park City, Utah. The opening slate made clear that this year’s lineup is intent on balancing crowd-pleasing star-driven titles with intimate, risk-taking work from filmmakers staking out new areas.

Kiss Of A Spider Woman

This film, starring Jennifer Lopez, was a must to work on for her, along with the assembled cast of Diego Luna, Tonatiuh, Bruno Bichir, and Josefina Scaglione. This new musical, led by Lopez, arrives at a moment when the genre is experiencing renewed mainstream interest, from blockbuster adaptations to smaller-scale experiments. Justin Lin, the film’s director, has demonstrated a talent for transforming musicals into dynamic performances on a larger budget, showcasing that the film remained melodic despite some minor limitations while creating this intriguing film. ‘Kiss of a Spider Woman’ feels vibrant and attention-grabbing, capturing the audience with its masterful film. It didn’t truly feel like a typical musical.

Love, Brooklyn

Director Rachael Holder guided an all-star cast that featured the talents of André Holland, Nicole Beharie, DeWanda Wise, Roy Wood Jr., Cassandra Freeman, and Cadence Reese. A tender love letter to the borough, Love, Brooklyn centers on a protagonist at a crossroads, forced to choose among multiple paths during a trying time. Zimmerman’s script unpacks contemporary dynamics around sex, relationships, and family with warmth and specificity, while Holder’s direction keeps the film grounded in everyday detail. It’s an observant film about letting go and standing by your decisions, no matter what they may be. It also showcased the consistent gentrification that Brooklyn goes through, neighborhood by neighborhood.
