As part of the roster announcement, forwards Samuel Fagemo and Jack Studnicka, along with goaltender Phoenix Copley, have cleared waivers and have been loaned to the Ontario Reign, the Kings’ primary AHL affiliate. Forward Koehn Ziemmer has also been loaned to the Prince George Cougars of the WHL. Forward Arthur Kaliyev and defenseman Drew Doughty have been placed on Injured Reserve (IR) to start the season.
The roster is headlined by the Kings’ cornerstone, Anze Kopitar, who is set to begin his record-setting 19th season with the franchise. Kopitar, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, reached several career milestones last season, including becoming the franchise leader in both games (1,373) and assists (792). Fellow veteran Trevor Lewis, another two-time Stanley Cup champion, is just two goals shy of 100 in his career and 26 games away from reaching the 1,000-game mark.
Among the returning players, Adrian Kempe and Trevor Moore will look to build on their stellar performances from last season. Kempe led the Kings in points (28-47=75), while Moore notched a team-high 31 goals, cementing their roles as vital offensive contributors.
Young star Quinton Byfield also returns after securing a five-year contract extension this summer. Byfield is coming off a breakout season where he recorded his first career 50-point campaign (20-35=55), solidifying his place as a critical component of the Kings’ future.
The Kings have also added several offseason acquisitions to the roster. Warren Foegele and Tanner Jeannot join the forward corps, bringing a physical presence and scoring touch, while defenseman Joel Edmundson adds experience and stability to the blue line. In goal, Darcy Kuemper returns to Los Angeles after playing for the Kings during the 2017-18 season, when he posted an impressive 10-1-3 record with three shutouts. Kuemper will partner with veteran goaltender David Rittich to provide the Kings with a reliable tandem between the pipes.
Of the 22 players on the opening roster, 10 were initially drafted by the Kings, a testament to the organization’s strong development system. Notable among them are Akil Thomas, Alex Turcotte, and Brandt Clarke, all of whom scored their first career NHL goals last season and are poised for more prominent roles this year.
The Kings’ blend of seasoned veterans, emerging young talent, and strategic offseason moves set the stage for what promises to be an exciting 2024-25 season as the team looks to make another deep playoff run.
