LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Kings are one of the Southern California team making noise in the right direction after defeating the visiting New York Islanders 5-2 on Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena.
“We were just prepared and had a lot of energy, we had a big win last night and that just carried over,” Matt Roy said about the team’s energetic first period.
Goalie Cal Petersen made 26 saves and picked up his ninth win in his last 11 starts. Roy scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Anze Kopitar for the 2-0 lead.
“I saw an opportunity to jump in and look for a little play and get a shot on that,” Roy said. “When I didn’t get that original one, I just kept my momentum going and try to find open ice in the back door area, and Kopi is an awesome… amazing player so he knew I was there and he made a good play.”
However Anders Lee responded to put the Islanders on the board with his 14th goal of the season. The second period got worse for New York as Cal Clutterbuck knocked the puck into his own net off a faceoff that put the Kings ahead 3-0. Quinton Byfield was credited with that goal which became his second goal of the season for Los Angeles.
Both Roy and Trevor Moore had a goal and assist each in the game that also featured goals from Phillip Danault, and Brendan Lemieux. Moore scored his ninth goal (one shy of his career high) and 21st assist of the season.
Los Angeles is 9-1-2 in their last 12 games and will host the Boston Bruins on Monday night.
