LONG BEACH, CA — The Los Angeles Sparks ended their two-game losing streak with a 70-68 win against the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night. The team’s strong defensive efforts and clutch performances were keys to capturing its first victory of the 2024 season.

Lexie Brown was the offensive drive for the Sparks, scoring 20 points and providing much-needed energy for Los Angeles. Her offensive contribution was complemented by an intense defensive effort from rookie Cameron Brink, who played a critical role in the game’s final moments. Brink’s timely and unceasing defense prevented the Mystics from getting that perfect shot while stripping Shakira Austin and blocking her shot after a loose ball scramble with just a few ticks remaining in the game.

Stefanie Dolson hit a big three-pointer that any fan could hear broadcaster Mike Breen say his famous phrase, “BANG!” The big basket gave the Sparks a 58-55 lead with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. Despite the Sparks extending their lead, Washington never quit or rolled over; instead, they fought to the very end. Such a valiant effort by the Mystics, however, the Sparks remained poised and locked in, enabling them to seal the victory.

Dearica Hamby finished with a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds, providing vital rebounding and presence inside. Kia Nurse added 13 points, rounding out the top performers for Los Angeles. Brink, who played 30 minutes, finished with four points, eight rebounds, and four blocks, earning a +11 plus/minus rating for her defensive prowess.

With their first win secured, Los Angeles looks to build momentum in the coming games, aiming to improve their WNBA standings early in the season.
