LAS VEGAS, NV — As the Las Vegas Aces anticipate their 2021 season back in the confines of their home away from the Bubble in 2020. Aces’ star A’ja Wilson is determined to not forget the taste of that 2020 WNBA Finals loss and making sure that she continues to use her platform to continue the fight of social justice.
“As individuals we’re going to continue to use our platform, we’re going to continue to be that voice for the voiceless,” Wilson said. “It’s strength in numbers and when you see a whole league that’s dedicated to the ‘Say Her Name’ campaign, Black Lives Matter and we’re going to continue to push.
“Regardless it won’t stop me from using the voice that I have and the platform I have to make sure these officers get held accountable, I don’t know if we can call them officers… these men that get held accountable for what they’ve done to our brothers and sisters int he Black community.“
On the court the Aces are loaded and are hungry to win a championship and what many expectations on this team in a pretty competitive Western Conference, Wilson locked in on making sure this team not only steps up but goes beyond what is required this season.
“When you look at our league across the board even with the moving pieces that happened in the off season, every team looks different and every team has grown,” Wilson explained. “It’s going to be tough especially for us (because) we’re going to have that target on our backs. We’re going to get everyone’s A-game so why not show up with our A-game!”
With the changes that have transpired including Candace Parker leaving the team that drafted her in the Los Angeles Sparks for the Chicago Sky, and Chelsea Grey and Riquna Williams departed the Sparks for the Aces, many may wonder how different this team will look this season.
“It feels like we have a completely different team, we were put in a situation that we’ve never in before which is the WNBA Finals,” she said. “I think you grow as a player and as a person, and for me I have a chip on my should and I hope we never get swept again its an awful feeling and Seattle was playing perfect basketball and that’s our measuring stick.”
This team is on a mission, and as long as they remain healthy throughout the season they are a serious championship contender and will be dangerous to opposing offenses.
