Makai Lemon Squeezed Iowa, Keeping USC’s CFP Hopes Alive

LOS ANGELES — The USC Trojans’ Saturday afternoon nail-biting 26-21 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes was precisely that, and the magician was none other than wide receiver Makai Lemon. His spectacular performance wasn’t just impressive; it was absolutely vital in keeping USC’s College Football Playoff hopes from fading into the Coliseum night.

Lemon was an absolute beast on the field, practically owning the Iowa secondary in sloppy weather conditions. By the time the final whistle blew, he caught 10 receptions for 153 yards and a crucial touchdown. But it wasn’t just the stats that told the story; it was how he got them.

His pivotal moment occurred in the third quarter, when the Trojans were in dire need of inspiration. With the Trojans trailing the Hawkeyes, Lemon caught an impressive 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Maiava. This play was more than just a score; it built momentum, shrinking Iowa’s lead 21-19 and invigorating the USC sideline with huge confidence.

But Lemon wasn’t content just catching passes. In another pivotal third-quarter moment, after King Miller fumbled, Lemon was there to scoop it up and keep the drive alive for USC.

With the buzz of victory still hanging in the air, Lemon reflected on his impactful day postgame.
I just put all my trust in my team,” he said, his voice brimming with conviction. “We put in the work all week, so I trust my team.

It’s a testament to the grind, the unseen hours that lead to those breakout moments under the lights, along with the Trojans coming together as a solid team weekly.

Lemon’s huge day was due in part to his quarterback, Jayden Maiava.

This is the connection we built during the week, all the hard work we put into it, is coming together”, Lemon said.

That kind of synergy, forged in practice, is what potential championship teams are made of. Maiava’s lock-in focus makes it difficult for secondaries to truly get an edge on Lemon or the Trojans’ other wide receiver, JaKobi Lane, on game days.

This well-deserved win keeps USC’s chances of a College Football Playoff appearance alive and well. Next Saturday, the Trojans will head into what’s sure to be hostile territory, facing off against the formidable Oregon Ducks. If Makai Lemon, JaKobi Lane, and Jayden Maiava can maintain that undeniable connection, USC might keep moving towards the College Football Playoff.
