MINNEAPOLIS, MN — In a chippy environment and a highly contested battle that went down to the wire, Phoenix Mercury superstar Diana Taurasi knocked down a key three pointer late in the final quarter for a 77-75 win over the Minnesota Lynx on Friday night.
Although that last moment bucket by Taurasi was a highlight, no bigger highlight than the Mercury’s defense and ability to crash the boards with authority as the team out rebounded the Lynx 42 to 36. Outstanding rebounding by Brianna Turner and Brittney Griner, as both players combined for 22 rebounds on the night.
“Rebounding is always a focial point especially against Minnesota because they’re big, strong,” Griner said.
Many of the players are confident in the team’s offense, but their focus appears to be consistent defense throughout the season starting with Opening Night.
