ATLANTA, GA — The college football world was stunned by Nick Saban’s retirement on January 10, 2024, after 17 seasons on the sidelines. Ole Miss head coach and former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin isn’t convinced we’ve seen the last of the legendary coach on the sidelines. Kiffin recently spoke about the real possibility of Saban returning to the game during SEC Media Days.
“What would be my reaction if Nick Saban returned to the field? I wouldn’t be surprised,” Kiffin told the media.
His reasoning is not merely speculative, but is based on his understanding of Saban’s passion and abilities. Kiffin’s perspective on this situation is not surprising, given the frequent communication between Kiffin and Saban.
“I kind of always thought that was gonna happen, kind of thought it happened after one year, but… and I say that just because even seeing recent stuff with him and talking to him on the phone…“
“Personally, I have no knowledge that he’s coming back; I don’t think anybody does,” Kiffin said, clarifying he has no inside information.

However, his conviction stems from Saban’s continued sharpness and impact. “I just, he’s so sharp still, I almost feel like it’s a waste, not no disrespect to the media, you guys do, but his ability to coach players and change lives in that way, and he’s so good at it.”
Kiffin believes that Saban’s coaching acumen is too valuable to remain just in the media, as he is currently an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay during the college football season. “I just think he’ll be back, whether it’s NFL or college.“

Kiffin’s prediction, although not confirmed, furthers the ongoing speculation about Saban’s future. Lane Kiffin wouldn’t be surprised if the greatest coach of all time returns to the game.
