ANN ARBOR, MI — With a commanding performance and a high level of skill and resilience, the No. 1 Oregon Ducks took a decisive 38-17 win over the Michigan Wolverines on their home turf, at a sold-out Michigan Stadium.
Quarterback Dillon Gabriel stood out in the victory, exhibiting his ability as a dual threat, and making plays in the air and on the ground.
Gabriel finished the game 22 of 34 for 294 yards and a touchdown pass. His dominance was also underscored by a 23-yard burst up the middle for a touchdown that gave the Ducks an 18-point halftime lead, enough of a buffer to dictate the rest of the afternoon.
“He is the most zen dude you’ve ever been around,” Lanning said about Gabriel.
Oregon’s victory was notable, mainly because the Ducks lost their top receiver and punt returner, Tez Johnson, to an apparent shoulder injury in the first quarter. Even without Johnson, who ranks among the NCAA leaders with 64 catches, the Ducks’ offense didn’t miss a beat.
Running back Jordan James was another part of Oregon’s balanced attack. With 117 rushing yards and a touchdown, he added more threat in the ground game. His performance allowed the necessary ground support to keep the Wolverines’ defense off-balance.
This win solidifies Oregon’s claim to the top spot, proving how deep and versatile they are even when one of their big guns is injured. Led by Gabriel’s terrific play, the Ducks’ knack for executing when the pressure’s on is helping secure their place as a major force in college football.
Oregon will host Maryland on Saturday at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, November 9.
