DENVER, CO – The Kansas City Chiefs organization can breathe a huge sigh of relief after an MRI on Friday morning revealed no “significant additional damage” to the knee of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes injured and disclosed his knee cap on a quarterback sneak late in the first half of the Chiefs against the Denver Broncos game. The injury looked to be more serious after Mahomes laid on the ground in pain after the play.
Fortunately Mahomes was able to walk off the field with the Chiefs training staff to the locker room where he did not return to the Thursday night game.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport , the best case scenario is for Mahomes to miss a few weeks and the team is expected to have their franchise quarterback back under center this season.
“His knee didn’t even look like a knee. It was all out of whack,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce told reporters after the game.
The Chiefs ended their two game losing streak with a 30-6 victory of their AFC West opponent Broncos at Mile High.
Mahomes could return for the showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City or wait until the team faces the Oakland Raiders. No one truly knows except for Mahomes on when he’ll be ready for his return. The Chiefs will continue to monitor his progress and will not sacrifice placing him back on the field before it’s time. The Chiefs will now be led at quarterback by Matt Moore.
The Chiefs host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, followed by the Minnesota Vikings, and then travel on the road to Tennessee to face the Titans. It appears to be a favorable schedule, if Kansas City can weather the storm until Mahomes’ return, their Super Bowl ambitions may not be wiped away like Thanos’ waving his glove.
