LOS ANGELES — Penn State made an impressive comeback to defeat USC 33-30 in an exhilarating overtime clash at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, largely thanks to a record-breaking performance by tight end Tyler Warren. Warren caught 17 passes to tie an FBS record. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions for fans, with both teams displaying impressive skill and resilience.
USC established a robust and early lead with a combination of sharp offensive plays led by quarterback Miller Moss and staunch defense coached by defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn that kept the Penn State Nittany Lions at bay for most of the first half. The Trojans showcased their prowess with well-coordinated drives, leaving Penn State needing help finding its footing in the first half.
However, the Nittany Lions were not deterred. As the second half began, Penn State’s offense began to gel, with quarterback Drew Allar connecting effectively with his receiver Harrison Wallace III and running backs Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton throughout the game. Warren emerged as the star of the day, delivering an unforgettable performance with 224 receiving yards on the day. Warren’s athleticism and precise route-running were on full display as he made crucial catches that kept Penn State within striking distance.
The game intensified as it entered the fourth quarter, with both teams trading blows and the lead changing hands multiple times. USC’s defense found themselves under increasing pressure as Warren continued to exploit the gaps in their coverage. Each successful drive by Penn State was met with determination by USC, who managed to keep the score within a single possession. With less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Singleton caught a 14-yard pass for the tying touchdown.
“It was a gut punch, no doubt about it,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley said.
USC had a golden opportunity to win the game in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Still, questionable play calling and not-so-great clock management cost them the chance to hand Penn State their first conference loss of the season. The score remained tied as time expired, setting the stage for a tense overtime period. Penn State wasted no time pressing its advantage. Warren again stepped up, making a stunning touchdown catch that not only sealed the victory for Penn State but also etched his name into the record books for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single game.
Ryan Barker knocked in a 36-yard field goal for the win as the Nittany Lions players erupted victoriously.
“I think the word ‘resilient’ was probably the best word to define our team today,” Penn State head coach James Franklin said.
This victory was a testament not only to Tyler Warren’s exceptional talent but also to Penn State’s determination and adaptability in the face of adversity. The win has energized Penn State and could raise the AP standings.
USC will look to regroup and get ready for Maryland on the road next week. Riley has lost eight out of his last 13 games.
