ATLANTA, GA — The college football season roared to life in neutral territory, and if the opening act was any indication, the South Carolina Gamecocks are ready to make some noise. Led by the dynamic play of quarterback LaNorris Sellars, South Carolina put on an impactful fourth-quarter performance to defeat Virginia Tech 24-11, signaling a promising start to their campaign.

The Gamecocks wasted no time setting the tone. Their opening drive was a picture of efficiency, culminating in a prime opportunity for Sellars to display his dual-threat capabilities. He seized it, tucking the ball and scurrying for a 15-yard touchdown run, giving South Carolina an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Momentum seemed to be building when Sellars connected on what looked like an incredible deep pass to Nyck Harbor for another score, but the football gods intervened. After a review, the touchdown was agonizingly called back – a harsh reminder that every play demands complete control through the ground.

The second and third quarters then devolved into a classic defensive slugfest. Both teams’ defenses tightened up, turning the game into a strategic chess match where every yard was earned, and every possession was precious. Points became a rare commodity, and the tension was palpable.

As the fourth quarter got underway, it was time for Sellars to shine. The young quarterback demonstrated remarkable skill, extending plays with his mobility and sustaining drives with his passing ability. He concluded a significant drive with an extraordinary deep throw to Nyck Harbor, resulting in a 64-yard touchdown pass that, on this occasion, was free from penalties or reviews. This crucial score ultimately sealed the fate of the game, as the Gamecocks surged ahead to secure a commanding 24-11 victory.

While the win was comprehensive, it wasn’t without its teachable moments. Sellars took four sacks at the hands of the Hokies’ defense, highlighting some areas for growth in the Gamecocks’ offensive line and a need for improved pocket awareness from their young signal-caller. Still, his overall stat line was impressive: 12-of-19 passing for 209 yards and a touchdown, complemented by his rushing score.

We’ve been stapling our offense pretty much. We just like it. It has answers to pretty much everything,” Sellars explained regarding the Harbor touchdown pass. “So it’s kind of like all week, hey, we don’t know what they’re going to come out and do, but it’s a good play. It has answers for everything. When we got it, safety came down, we just knew we had it.”

That kind of read-and-react execution against a formidable opponent is precisely what South Carolina fans hoped to see. This opening win, fueled by Sellars’ fourth-quarter heroics and a stifling defensive effort, provides a fantastic foundation. While there are certainly things to clean up, the Gamecocks have shown they have the playmakers and the grit to contend. The season is young, but South Carolina has already announced its presence with authority.
