THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Rams star cornerback Jalen Ramsey readies himself for a big road showdown against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, he’s never been a stranger to letting his voice be heard on a variety of topics from football to recruitment to education in communities of color to social justice matters.
On Wednesday, a guilty verdict was reached in the trial of three white men Trevis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William Bryan Jr. who murdered an unarmed Black jogger Ahmaud Arbrey in a Brunswick, Georgia neighborhood. Everyone across the nation seemed to be surprised at the verdict, yet many athletes during the 2020 season made their voices heard regarding the injustices that continue perpetuate our society. Ramsey has always had a pulse to various communities whether it being apart of bettering education opportunities with partnering with a school (Purpose Preparatory Academy) in Nashville, Tennessee, or making sure families in Los Angeles have an easier time enjoying the holiday season. Ramsey never forgot where he came from and the responsibilities that are bestowed upon as an Black athlete in this society. Many athletes and entertainers weighed in on the verdict from Lakers star Lebron James, Viola Davis, Wanda Sykes, Kathy Griffin, to FS1 analyst Emmanuel Acho and Ramsey made sure he was heard clearly.
“Obviously, everybody saw it and everybody I guess was kind of worried about what the verdict would be,” Ramsey said. “But once it came down and justice was served, that was definitely a step in the right direction. But there’s still a lot of work to do. You know what I mean?”
Ramsey continues to focus on the other task which is obtaining wins on the field especially against some tough opponents. An intelligent and gifted cornerback that has the power to change the dynamic of a game on the field or change the climate off the field in positive way.
One may hope more athletes will continue to use their voice for the fight for justice and accountability continues in this country.
