NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Quarterback Matthew Stafford reported to camp for the first time with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday ready to begin the march towards greater expectations than his previous team in Detroit.
After being traded to the Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff essentially, Stafford has higher expectations with this Rams team that can be achieved if all the pieces in place remain healthy and win games along with the division.
“Not many people in my position get the chance to move teams to a place that’s had a bunch of recent success,” Stafford said. “I’m just excited to be a part of it.”
With the loss of running back Cam Akers to injury, the Rams will utilize the talents of Darrell Henderson while analyzing the talents of Xavier Jones, Raymond Calais, Jake Funk and Otis Anderson.
“It’s next man up. Those guys are going to battle it out,” Stafford said. “That’s the name of the game in this league. You’ve got to have depth. You’ve got to have guys step up. We’ll definitely have that.”
A confident group in tact, Stafford felt that coming to minicamp really gave him the understanding regarding the offense led by head coach Sean McVay. Stafford really desired to set the tone early with his new teammates in order to develop a synergy with the team.
“Where we’re playing, where I’m living, my teammates, coaching staff. All that is new for me. It’s definitely invigorating and a challenge for me, something I’m looking forward to.”
The Rams officially open up camp at UC Irvine this Wednesday afternoon.
