THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson is scheduled to be the starter this season for the team, however he left practice early due to an injury.
According to head coach Sean McVay, Henderson suffered an injury to his thumb and was unable to return.
“I’m not sure. He got his thumb, but don’t have any updates on that,” McVay said Monday after practice.
With running back Cam Akers out for the year due to a torn Achilles tendon, the latest injury with Henderson makes the running back room appear a bit thin at the moment. Test revealed Henderson suffered a mild thumb sprain, and the team is optimistic that he’ll be ready for the home opener against the Chicago Bears on September 12.
Xavier Jones had a solid game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night, and showed real promise as he looks to move up on the depth chart.
“I thought Xavier made some good plays in the pass game,” McVay said after reviewing Saturday’s film. “I thought as he got some more touches, you could feel he got into the rhythm of the game and positive from both those guys.”
Could the Rams decided to pick a veteran running back or will Jake Funk and Jones be ready to go on week 1 against the Bears if necessary?
“I think we’re still in the process of figuring all that out. We got a little bit of time. Darrell is a guy that’s been established and done some good things. But I was pleased with both those guys and (running backs coach) Thomas (Brown) does an excellent job leading that group,” McVay said.
