COSTA MESA — After missing 64 days, Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon returned to the facility on Thursday morning, smiling and ready to get started with the rest of the season.

Gordon held out due to contract dispute with the team, though seeking a new contract ahead of 2020 free agency, Gordon is not expected to play against the Dolphins. He could make his return against the Denver Broncos on October 6 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Backup running back Austin Ekeler who has started the past three weeks in Gordon’s place will get the start against the Dolphins in Miami. In Ekeler’s three starts he’s accumulated about 370 yards from scrimmage. According to head coach Anthony Lynn, both Justin Jackson and Ekeler will still be a major part of the offense moving forward.

Gordon is scheduled to speak to the media on Friday after he gets reps in with his teammates. Thursday, he hit the practice field for the first time in over two months.

Gordon had to return by November 29, in order to be eligible for free agency in 2020.
