LOS ANGELES, CA – One of the biggest goals for the WNBA and women’s basketball is to continue to drive up the popularity of the sport, especially as the league embarks on its 25th season.
Los Angeles Sparks center Nneka Ogwumike has been at the forefront of elevating the women’s game by appearing on the recent cover of SLAM Magazine along with Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Skyler Diggins-Smith with the headline “The Power of Revolution.”
These four players are not only well-respected and have distinguished resumes throughout their brilliant careers, but are role models for young girls and women everywhere.
Ogwumike spoke about being on the cover with three other WNBA legends.
“The SLAM cover was really fun, it was a fun few days,” Ogwumike said. “We were actually able to get together and have a COVID-safe mini camp, the four of us. I needed it; it was fantastic.”
“Sky (Diggins-Smith), I’ve been old friends with for a while,” Ogwumike continued. “With Sue (Bird) and D (Taurasi) who I have become good friends with over time, it was really like a dream come true and I’m glad we are able to represent the beginning of such a monumental season with that cover.”
Ogwumike wasn’t just on a magazine cover but also a movie poster for her character “Arachnneka” as part of “The Goon Squad” in the upcoming film “Space Jam: A New Legacy” starring LeBron James and other NBA/WNBA players (also executive producer) set to be released on July 16.
“Of course with ‘Arachnneka’ out there now, I hope everyone is just as excited as I am with it,” Ogwumike said. “It’s just such an honor to be apart of (Space Jam) A New Legacy in entertainment and in the real world. I’m just excited, I don’t really know if there is any other way to describe how honored I am to be apart of it.”
Ogwumike is proud to be a part of anything that creates more awareness for women’s basketball and any women’s sports.
“We’re certainly still on the front end of women’s sports and women’s basketball, really making a boom in this world and I’m happy to be apart of any forward movement,” Ogwumike said.
In order for the WNBA and these talented female players to continue to ascend, being involved in major media projects like films, magazine covers, and television shows are essential to bringing more attention to the women’s game and ensuring this league will be around for another 25 years.
