LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Sparks’ 93-69 loss to the Connecticut Sun (24-11) was a sad repeat of Tuesday night. The Sparks had a strong showing to start the game, but that quickly faded.
Going into the half, the Sparks were only down by 11.
Late in the third quarter, the Sparks were down by 25. The only saving grace for this game is that they didn’t lose by 30.
During the post-game press conference, Brittney Sykes and Chennedy Carter almost seemed relieved that the battles with travel, injuries, and even off-the-court battles are over.
With the loss to the Sun, the Sparks (13-22) have officially been eliminated from the playoffs.
“We’ve dealt with so much adversity on and off the court. That’s not an excuse but it is reality,” Sykes said. She went on to say everyone on the team fought as hard as they could.
Sykes said she is also proud of the way Carter has worked through her troubles this season.
Now it is time to look forward. The Sparks have expiring contracts from Sykes, Kristi Toliver, Jordin Canada, and Lexie Brown. Carter, Jasmine Walker, and Olivia Nelson-Ododa still haven’t found their footing, and the team still needs to name a new head coach and GM.
Interim head coach Fred Williams alluded to the possibility of his tenure continuing next season.
“I’m not going to leave you out there with a blank in my future,” said Williams. “If it’s with LA or Auburn, right now we’re still talking about a few things on this end.”
The Sparks’ final game of the season is Sunday at 4 pm PST at Crypto.com Arena against the Dallas Wings (17-17).
