SZA Releases New Song “Save The Day” from Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers Soundtrack
BURBANK, CA — The intersection of chart-topping R&B and animated storytelling just got a major boost. Multi-Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Golden Globe nominee SZA has officially joined the Disney/Pixar universe, lending her pen and voice to “Save The Day,” an original track for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming feature, Hoppers.
The track, co-written by the TDE (Top Dawg entertainment) artist alongside Ben Lovett and Rob Bisel, anchors the film’s musical identity, which is set to hit theaters on March 6.
For director Daniel Chong, landing SZA wasn’t just a professional coup; it was personal. Chong revealed that the singer’s discography served as a stabilizing force during the film’s production.
“SZA’s music saved me during the making of this movie,” Chong said. “It was a lifeline during the stress of the filmmaking process, a voice that comforted and inspired me through it all.”
According to the director, the song does more than play over the credits; it embodies the spirit of the protagonist, Mabel.
“When we first heard the song, some of us cried; SZA perfectly captured the heart of our main character,” Chong added. “‘Save The Day’ is not just an emotional journey through Mabel’s convictions, but an anthem for a whole generation just looking for some runway to change the world. Our movie is forever grateful to Solána, Rob Bisel, and Ben Lovett for this beautiful gift.“
Fans got their first taste of the track on February 18 via SiriusXM’s Disney Hits channel. For the collectors, Disney is leaning into the physical media trend with a special “Save The Day” die-cut vinyl shaped like Mabel, the film’s lead character, available exclusively at the Disney Music Emporium.
SZA’s vocals don’t solely define the musical landscape of Hoppers. The film boasts an original score by the legendary Mark Mothersbaugh, the creative mind behind Devo and countless iconic film scores.
Mothersbaugh’s involvement is a perfect tonal match for the film’s quirky premise.
“When I saw an early version of the film, I was struck by it,” Mothersbaugh said. “I like the message and, in a way, it’s kind of a Devo message… It’s positive information for people to think about.“
Chong offered high praise for the composer, noting that Mothersbaugh “captured the crazy energy that is Hoppers with his musical genius, all while being a supportive and generous presence to our whole team.”
‘Hoppers’ is produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle (Incredibles 2). Hoppers follows Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda), an animal lover who uses new technology to transfer her consciousness into a robotic beaver. What starts as a scientific experiment turns into a crusade against a smooth-talking mayor, played by Jon Hamm, as Mabel teams up with a charismatic beaver named King George (Bobby Moynihan). The stacked voice cast also includes heavy hitters Meryl Streep, Dave Franco, and Kathy Najimy.
The full soundtrack, featuring both SZA’s anthem and Mothersbaugh’s score, drops alongside the film’s wide theatrical release on Friday, March 6.
SZA’s career is marked by significant accolades, including Academy Award® and Golden Globe® award nominations. She has secured over 70 wins, including two GRAMMY® Awards this year for “Luther,” her chart-topping collaboration with Kendrick Lamar which won the Record of the Year Award.
Eager fans can catch the movie early during special access screenings starting Saturday, February 28.
