INDIANAPOLIS — The Big Ten Conference is currently undergoing a seismic shift, a transformation that is underscored by the incorporation of four new teams from the West Coast. This momentous change has ignited a flurry of speculation about the future of college football conferences, the dynamics of the Big Ten, and the potential emergence of new powerhouse teams.

When we trace the evolution of the conference, it’s impossible to ignore the profound impact of the Big Ten’s growth. What began as a ten-team conference has now blossomed into a robust 18-team entity, with the recent addition of high-profile programs like UCLA and USC marking a monumental shift in the college football landscape. Given the current trend of conference realignments and expansions, the prospect of three super conferences in the future is not just a possibility, but a likelihood.

Veteran sports commentator Brad Nestler, who has been in the industry for over 40 years, notes that the expansion of the Big Ten to coast-to-coast coverage is unprecedented. He reflects on his journey from covering the Big Ten in its early days to now, where the conference spans from the East Coast to the West Coast. This growth has broadened the geographical reach and enhanced the overall profile of the Big Ten.

The addition of UCLA and USC to the Big Ten is not just a move, but a strategic masterstroke. It’s a bold step that positions the conference in major media markets like Los Angeles, enhancing its visibility and financial clout. However, as Nestler’s sentiment of nostalgia for the Pac-12 suggests, this evolution is not without its bittersweet moments, acknowledging the rich traditions that are being overshadowed by the changing dynamics.

As for which team might emerge as the dominant force in the Big Ten, Nestler suggests that Ohio State is the front-runner. With a roster full of top talent and a strong recruiting class, Ohio State is well-positioned to contend for the national championship. Their impressive lineup includes standout players in offense and defense, making them a formidable team on paper.

I think Ohio State is going to be the favorite with their talent level is off the charts and what they’ve done in the portal,” Nessler told Nitecast Media. “Bringing in a couple of guys who are superstars, their quarterback situation with [Will] Howard coming in from Kansas State. I don’t know if they need him to be special because their backfield is going to be super special (and) their receivers are going to be phenominal again. Their defense is loaded with number one [NFL] Draft choices, so if I just looked at it on paper I’d say Ohio State. Oregon is going to have something to say about that, they’ve had pretty good success with transfer quarterbacks and they’ll do the same thing. [Head coach] Dan Lanning and Steve Fans will be Big ten quality, SEC quality whatever you want to call it.”

Oregon, another key player in the conference, is also expected to make significant waves. Oregon is poised to challenge for top honors with a history of success in the transfer portal and a defense that competes at the highest levels. When considering potential dark horses, Nestler mentions Penn State. Although not traditionally seen as a dark horse, Penn State’s improved schedule and offensive strategies could position them as a strong contender. They could make a notable impact if they can effectively utilize their passing game and adapt to the evolving conference dynamics.

Penn State shouldn’t be considered a dark horse, but their schedule is a little better this year and there is no divisions. If they can start throwing the ball down the field instead of sideways… you can’t really Penn State is a dark horse.”

The excitement around college football is palpable as the Big Ten continues to grow and evolve. The conference’s expansion has set the stage for a new era of competition, with powerhouse teams like Ohio State and emerging challengers like Oregon and Penn State ready to make their mark. The future of college football promises to be dynamic and thrilling, with the Big Ten at the forefront of this transformative period.
