LOS ANGELES, CA — The 55th Annual NAACP Image Awards began at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, as Queen Latifah hosted the magnificent event that celebrated many facets of Black culture.
“The Color Purple” commanded and dominated the awards on Saturday night, securing four prestigious accolades, including Outstanding Motion Picture.
Colman Domingo stood out, earning Image Awards in both Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his dynamic performances in “Rustin” and “The Color Purple,”. Fantasia Barrino delivered a commanding role as Celie in “The Color Purple,” earning her the Outstanding Actress award in a motion picture. At one point in her speech, Barrino sang a heartfelt version of “To God is the Glory.” Taraji P. Henson also captured the Outstanding Supporting Actress prize for her role as Shug Avery.
In the television categories, Damson Idris was recognized as the Best Actor in a Drama Series for his remarkable work in FX’s “Snowfall,” which concluded with its final season. The show was created by the late John Singleton, who passed away in 2019. His emotional acceptance speech included heartfelt acknowledgment of his mother, who traveled from Lagos to be part of his triumph.
The highlight of the night was Usher’s dual recognition. Not only was he named Image Awards Entertainer of the Year, but he also received the 2024 President’s Award. Notable figures such as Rihanna and Lakers star LeBron James were previously honored in this category, and Usher was now part of an incredible group.
Amanda Gorman, a writer and activist, received the Chairman’s Award. At the same time, the legendary group New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, celebrating their impactful contribution to R&B music.
