COLUMBUS, OH – In a huge statement-making 14-7 victory over Texas, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ defense proved to be the decisive factor, stifling Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning for the majority of the game. The Buckeyes’ rebuilt defense, with safety Caleb Downs, showcased a remarkable ability to pressure Manning and execute complex coverage schemes.
Entering the season, Ohio State’s defense faced significant question marks. The team had to replace several key players who graduated or entered the NFL Draft, leaving gaps at crucial positions. However, new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia stepped in and quickly solidified the unit, transforming them into a formidable force.
Downs, along with Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese, emerged as leaders on the field. Patricia implemented schematic changes that resembled a pro-style defense, presenting a variety of challenges for the Texas offense. The Buckeyes alternated between odd and even defensive fronts, keeping Manning and the Longhorns guessing.

The odd front involved covering up the center, with a nose guard or defensive lineman lined up directly over him. In contrast, the even front featured a four-down defensive line with no one specifically lined up in the center. This flexibility allowed Ohio State to adapt to different offensive formations and create pressure from multiple angles.
The Ohio State defense annihilated opportunities for the Texas offense to score throughout the first three quarters, consistently applying pressure and utilizing a range of defensive formations. They demonstrated their resilience by stopping Texas twice within the Ohio State 10-yard line. This performance underscored the defense’s ability to restrict significant plays and force Texas into difficult situations.

Moving forward, the Ohio State defense aims to continue improving each week and earn the respect it believes it deserves. The Buckeyes will look to build on this momentum as they host Grambling State on September 6 at Ohio Stadium.
