LOS ANGELES — Amid the coronavirus pandemic, millions of us were forced to quarantine to avoid further spread of the virus that’s been ravaging through the U.S. and other parts of the world.
With many of us adjusting to working and learning from home, we’ve also had to adjust to being cooped up in the house 24/7 and our imaginations, along with our constant quest for entertainment can only be stretched so thin.
TikTok quickly became the outlet that we’ve needed to channel our frustration and pure boredom into something creative and exciting that could instantaneously brighten up someone’s day in between Zoom meetings.
What started out as people making 15 second videos of themselves lip-syncing or dancing to one of the latest songs, turned into an overnight sensation with content ranging from dance, comedy and lifestyle videos to short hair and makeup tutorials. It’s created a space for those of us that are tired of staring at our TV screens every day and are looking for a sense of normality amidst this cloud of uncertainty.
With the sports and entertainment industries forced to take a backseat, TikTok has provided a platform for musicians, athletes, actors and other public figures to connect with their fans in a safe yet intimate way.
Musicians like Pop/R&B singer Jason Derulo have completely embraced TikTok, amassing a whopping 34.2 million followers by performing daring stunts, taking on the latest dance challenge or by creating one of his mouth-watering ‘milli meals’ which he cooks up every time he gains another million followers.
TikTok has turned songs like Da Baby’s “Rockstar”, Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage”, Chris Brown’s “Go Crazy” and Doja Cat’s “Say So” into viral dance crazes.
It’ll definitely be a sight to see the next time we’re able to be in a social environment again and one of these TikTok staples rages through the speakers.
