SEATTLE, WA — The Washington Huskies concluded the 2025 season on a high note with a dominant 38-10 victory over Boise State in the L.A. Bowl. The anticipation for the 2026 season was huge due to quarterback Demond Williams returning, who had some adding his name to the Heisman watch list.

After confirming on January 2, Johnson recently decided to jump into the Transfer Portal, shocking many across the college football landscape.

I have to do what is best for me and my future,” Johnson said. He passed for 3,065 yards with 25 touchdowns to eight interceptions, while he rushed for over 600 yards.

According to ESPN, when he publicly declared for the portal, he added a “Do Not Contact” tag. The do-not-contact tag means no team can reach out to Williams first; communication can only occur if he initiates it. Looking back on his time at Washington, Johnson recently offered insights into his growth as a player and person.

I’ll say just growing as a leader throughout the season. I think you can ask all the guys or coaches,” Williams told Nitecast Media. “About halfway through the season, I felt like there was a… a switch flipped in my head to where… Uh, just trying to turn the team into mine and continue to use my voice more. Also, just being a better leader on the sidelines. Find ways to motivate guys in between drives and continue to have us continue to play at a high level.

This newfound leadership and vocal presence were a testament to his development within the Huskies program, making his departure all the more bittersweet for fans. Johnson had truly embraced his role, evolving beyond a talented athlete into the next team’s undeniable voice.

According to Yahoo Sports, Williams signed a one-year revenue-share agreement with the Huskies worth about $4 million. The agreement “prohibits a player from entering the portal once signed” and “prohibits the player’s NIL rights to be used by any other school, though the player can sign outside marketing agreements.” Washington is seeking legal actions currently to determine their next move.

Johnson embarks on an unprecedented, self-directed search for his next collegiate home, but the questions linger. Where will this agile quarterback end up? Furthermore, what implications do his surprising decision hold for the future of both the Washington Huskies and Williams himself as he maneuvers through the uncertain landscape of the Transfer Portal? One certainty remains, Demond Williams is taking charge of his own journey, leaving a considerable gap in Seattle and generating significant intrigue about his upcoming endeavors.
