LOS ANGELES — Actor, producer and media mogul Will Smith announced that a “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” reboot has been picked up by NBC’s Peacock TV streaming service. On Tuesday, Smith revealed on his YouTube channel that “Bel-Air” was ordered for two seasons.
“We have just officially closed the deal with Peacock with an unprecedented two-season order from a pitch,” Smith said to writer/director Morgan Cooper and writer/executive producer Chris Collins. “I’ve been in this business for 30 years, and that does not happen.”
According to the press release form NBCUniversal’s Peacock TV, “set in modern-day America, BEL-AIR is a serialized one-hour dramatic analogue of the 90’s sitcom ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air.
“With a reimagined vision, BEL-AIR will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.”
After Cooper shot a trailer of the reboot that got more than six million views, Smith loved the idea and called it brilliant.
“I was driving on 71 in Kansas City, my hometown,” Cooper said, explaining how he got the concept for Bel-Air. “I was thinking about the show and it’s show we all grew up with all ’90’s kids. It’s apart of our life. I drove under this overpass, when I came from under that over pass the entire world just opened up for me.“
Smith will also serve as the show’s executive producer and advisor.
