ATLANTA, GA — Hillman College reopens its gates with a fresh crop of students and familiar faces in the revival A Different World, and at the center of the new chapter is Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon) Whitley and Dwayne’s sheltered, show‑loving youngest daughter who’s determined to carve out her own identity while living under parental legend.
Deborah arrives at Hillman as a charismatic free spirit with a big heart and a flair for the spotlight. Raised in the shadow of two campus icons, she’s both buoyed and burdened by expectations. Her freshman arc threads the familiar coming‑of‑age beats, self‑discovery, missteps, friendship but this time the stakes feel different because she’s not just stepping into college life; she’s negotiating a legacy.
Surrounding Deborah is a new generation built to reflect the breadth of Black life on an HBCU campus. Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai) is the focused first‑generation criminal‑justice major whose ambition is tethered to family responsibility. Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV) brings the star‑athlete storyline a five‑star recruit navigating the tension between personal dreams and family legacy. Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall) is the psychology whiz who fixes everyone else’s problems while dodging his own. Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a church‑raised small‑town girl, wrestles with defining modern values on her own terms. And Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian‑Nigerian fashion entrepreneur, injects creative courage and entrepreneurial hustle into campus life.
